Developing a New Paradigm to Solve the Privacy Paradox

Abstract

Privacy protection has major economic, societal and individual implications. However, for more than 20 years research has not been able to explain why people do not act to protect their privacy, while claiming it is important to them. This project takes a bold approach to finally overcome this so-called Privacy Paradox. We integrate different psychological theories and privacy models (Theory of Planned Behaviour, Rubicon Model of Action Phase, APCO Model) proposing a paradigm shift expecting to generate new knowledge in privacy research, which can currently neither explain nor provide means to overcome the vexing issue. Based on a sequence of experimental studies, we offer a conceptualization of the Privacy Paradox, develop and test a Attitude Implementation Model (AIM) together with a behavioural privacy training program.

Marten Risius is Senior Lecturer in Business Information Systems at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia. His research interests are in the areas of social media and blockchain technologies. He applies business analytics to solve managerial and societal issues (e.g., privacy (paradox), disinformation, online extremism). His articles have been published in several journals, such as Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Strategic Information Systems, Journal of Information Technology, MISQ Executive, Business Information Systems Engineering, AIS Transactions on Human Computer Interaction, Communications of the AIS, and peer-reviewed conference proceedings (ICIS, ECIS, AMCIS, PACIS). His work is funded by the Hong Kong Research Council, the Australian Department of Home Affairs, Facebook, the Global Internet Forum to Counter Terrorism. Dr. Risius’ research has been recognized with numerous international awards from academia and industry such as the Information System’s discipline highest honor for young scholars, the AIS Early Career Award.
