Title: "Bye-box": An analysis of non-promotion on the Amazon marketplace

Authors: Prof. Dr. Ulrich Laitenberger

Abstract:

We study key design features of the Amazon website: the buybox and the comparison table on the product pages.  We use detailed product-level data collected from the US version of Amazon, as well as from eBay and the e-commerce platform of Walmart. Our regression analyses reveal that both the buybox and the comparison table are powerful tools for steering consumers on the Amazon marketplace. Moreover, we find that these tools are combined in a way that is difficult to reconcile with the hypothesis of an independent marketplace operator.
