The Revival of Sleeping Beauties: How to Address the Underutilization of Inherited Personal Goods?
Abstract: This research investigates whether and how consumers differ in their usage of valuable inherited possessions from that of purchased products or gifts. A series of surveys and experiments offer consistent evidence that consumers are less likely to use inherited items, compared to non-inherited equivalents, due to their lower perceived functional value and imbued with symbolic significance. Importantly, consumers’ reluctance to use valuable inherited goods hinders the likelihood to engage in product repair, a tendency that weakens when consumers are primed with green values. Implication for branding sustainable practices, including the reuse and repurposing of pre-owned products, are discussed.
