The new European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) just became enforceable on May 25th, 2018. Aiming to strengthen the protection of the data from EU citizens and to create a European standard for data privacy laws, the European Commission created a new set of rules for organizations. Every organization that processes personal data – defined as any information that can identify an individual – from EU citizens is affected by this new regulation. Therefore, financial institutions also have to adjust their data processing and reporting activities to be compliant. In this (ongoing) study, we explore a dataset of the websites from over 120 financial institutions of 14 countries. We observe when and in what way these websites implemented the GDPR to determine the range of different interpretations and implementations of the regulation.
